Crown vs Bridge What’s the Difference?
Crown vs Bridge What’s the Difference?
If your dentist has recommended a crown or a bridge, you might be wondering what each one is — and why one might be recommended over the other. Here’s a plain-language explanation.
What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a custom-made cap that fits over an existing tooth. It is used when a tooth is damaged, decayed, cracked, or weakened to the point where a filling alone is not sufficient to restore it. The crown covers the entire visible portion of the tooth above the gumline, restoring its shape, function, and appearance.
Crowns may also be placed over a tooth following root canal treatment, or as part of a dental implant.
What Is a Dental Bridge?
A dental bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth. It consists of one or more artificial teeth (called pontics) held in place by crowns on the teeth on either side of the gap. A bridge is fixed in place — it is not removable like a denture.
Which One Is Right for You?
The key difference is straightforward:
- A crown restores a tooth that is still present but damaged
- A bridge replaces a tooth that is missing
Other factors your AHPRA-registered dentist will consider include the condition of the surrounding teeth, your overall oral health, bone levels, and your individual clinical situation. In some cases, a dental implant may also be discussed as an alternative to a bridge — your dentist will explain the options available to you.
